Gender equality at work more than 200 years off: report

Image
The World Economic Forum (WEF) report said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade GENEVA: Women may be shouting louder than ever for equal treatment and pay, but a report out Tuesday indicates it will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe. The World Economic Forum (WEF) report said there had been some improvements in wage equality this year compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade. But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education. At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found. The Geneva-based organisation´s annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 count

Russian lawmakers back law jailing anyone urging teenagers to protest

Supporters of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny shout slogans during a rally for a boycott of a March 18 presidential election in Moscow, Russia January 28, 2018-Reuters MOSCOW: Russian lawmakers approved draft legislation that would make it a jailable offense to call on teenagers to attend unauthorised street protests, a move Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny said on Tuesday was designed to frustrate his own activity. Navalny, a 42-year-old lawyer who says he wants to succeed Vladimir Putin as president, has tried to win the support of a young demographic, including teenagers, some of whom have attended his nationwide anti-Kremlin protests. Police have sometimes dispersed his rallies using force and jailed hundreds of attendees, including teenagers, whose presence has drawn sharp criticism from the Kremlin which has accused Navalny of manipulating minors for political gain. The new legislation proposes introducing fines of up to 50,000 rubles ($750) or a jail sentence of up to 15 d

CBS ex-CEO won’t get severance after sexual misconduct claims

Les Moonves had been expected to receive up to $120 million as part of a severance package that will now not materialise. Photo: AFP Les Moonves, the onetime head of CBS, was fired for cause and will not receive a severance package in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations, the television network announced Monday. Moonves, who transformed the corporation into the most watched television network in the country, was one of the most respected executives in Hollywood until he was first publicly accused. Two articles published by The New Yorker — in July and in September — detailed allegations against the 69-year-old television titan from 12 different women. He resigned in September. At the time, CBS said Moonves and the network would donate $20 million to supporting the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace. CBS said a company investigation found Moonves guilty of "willful and material misfeasance," and said he refused to cooperate with the probe. He had been

Afghanistan sends team to join Taliban peace talks in UAE

Image
An Afghan peace negotiations team has arrived in Abu Dhabi, an official said Tuesday, a day after talks attended by US and Taliban representatives were held in the city aimed at ending the 17-year conflict. The team, led by chief negotiator Abdul Salam Rahimi, "arrived in Abu Dhabi to begin proximity dialogue with the Taliban delegation and to prepare for a face-to-face meeting between the two sides", the Afghan presidential spokesman Haroon Chakhansuri tweeted. The 12-person team was first announced in November by President Ashraf Ghani as part of a diplomatic effort to bring the Taliban to the table for peace talks with the government in Kabul. But the Taliban have not confirmed a meeting, and issued a statement on Monday reiterating their long-standing vow not to speak with Afghan officials. In a new message released Tuesday the Taliban said they had held "preliminary talks" with the US State Department´s special envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Monday, with the discu

102-year-old great-granny becomes 'oldest' skydiver

Image
A 102-year-old great-grandmother is believed to have become the world's oldest skydiver after plunging 14,000 feet (4,300 metres) through the South Australian sky. Centenarian adrenaline junkie Irene O´Shea said she "felt normal" after a 220 kilometre per hour (140 mph) dive that sent her cheeks flapping wildly. She completed her first skydive to mark her 100th birthday in 2016, but organisers claimed it was Sunday´s successful tandem dive at the age of 102 years and 194 days that earned her a place in the history books. "It was very clear up there, and the weather was good but it was very cold," said O´Shea, according to Australian media. O´Shea took the plunge to raise funds for a motor neurone disease charity, after her daughter died from the illness.

China, India agree to maintain border peace as Modi wraps up visit Neither Beijing nor New Delhi calls the other an enemy, which means both expect bilateral ties to improve PHOTO: REUTERS WUHAN:  India and China have agreed to improve communication between their militaries to maintain peace at the border, India’s foreign secretary said on Saturday at the end of an ice-breaking trip to China by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi has spent the past 24 hours in the central Chinese city of Wuhan for informal meetings with President Xi Jinping, months after a dispute over a stretch of their high-altitude Himalayan border rekindled fears of war between the Asian nations. Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale told reporters after Modi and Xi wrapped up their talks that both leaders had agreed their two countries had the maturity and wisdom to handle all their differences peacefully through talks. “On the issue of the India-China boundary question, the two leaders endorsed the work of the spe

Strike on Syria air base kills 14, including Iranian forces SANA first said the missile strike on the Tayfur base was a suspected US attack, but later withdrew all reference to America PHOTO COURTESY: SPUTNIK INTERNATIONAL DAMASCUS / BEIRUT:  An early-morning strike on a Syrian government air base in the country’s centre killed 14 fighters, including Iranian forces allied to the regime, a monitoring group said on Monday. “At least 14 fighters were killed in the strike on the T-4 airport, among them Iranian forces,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor. Syrian state media had earlier reported dead and wounded in the strike, without giving casualty figures. The T-4 base lies in Syria’s central Homs province and is also known as the Tiyas airport. Forces from regime allies Russia and Iran, as well as fighters from the Tehran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah militia, are known to have a presence there, said Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman.
