Govt injected $7b to keep rupee overvalued in recent years

Govt injected $7b to keep rupee overvalued in recent years Opponents of the rigid exchange rate policy argued that it adversely affected the country’s exports and foreign currency reserves. PHOTO: FILE ISLAMABAD:  The PML-N government has pumped $7 billion into defending the overvalued rupee against the US dollar in recent years, claimed a member of the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) while seeking action against the people responsible for the spending. Neither State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Tariq Bajwa nor Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Miftah Ismail contested the claim made by Dr Abid Hasan during an EAC meeting held early this month, a member of the EAC confided to The Express Tribune. Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi chaired the meeting. Bajwa was said to have affirmed the claim made by Hasan, officials said. Bajwa is currently in the United States and could not be approached for comments. The EAC member questioned the rationale of pumping $7 billion in the last

PM’s aide going to attend IMF meetings just days before budget

PM’s aide going to attend IMF meetings just days before budget By   Shahbaz  Pakistan was also trying to seek financial assistance from a few friendly countries to ease pressure off the external account that was fast eating up the foreign currency reserves. PHOTO: FILE ISLAMABAD:  Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has decided to send his finance aide to attend spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a bid to assess the mood in Washington before Pakistan makes a decision on whether to seek another bailout. The decision to send Dr Miftah Ismail, Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance, to Washington hardly 10 days before the announcement of budget signifies the importance of the move. Ismail would go to Washington on April 18 on a three-day visit, according to officials. The government will present next fiscal year’s budget on April 27, about five weeks ahead of the original schedule as the government’s constitutional term is going to end in the first week of June. To leave or not to leave: Will Chaudhry Nisar actually quit PML-N for PTI?

To leave or not to leave: Will Chaudhry Nisar actually quit PML-N for PTI? For his 34-year-long association with Nawaz Sharif, Chaudhry Nisar wants his due influence in the affairs of the party. While in conversation with a local news anchor, Chaudhry Nisar  maintained  his position that, “In my entire political career, I have never demanded influential positions in the party or the government.”  This is quite puzzling, for if not power and influence, what exactly has Nisar been looking for in the shady world of local politics? However, now that he is struck with a dilemma at an interesting point of his political career, it makes one curious whether his choice will be to remain with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), or  opt for its rival , the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). His decisions at many crucial periods of his political career are reflective of his preferences. When  Pervez Musharraf  toppled the Nawaz government, Nisar depicted himself as a politician of a different t

Trade deficit widens to $27.3 billion even as Pakistan records higher exports

Trade deficit widens to $27.3 billion even as Pakistan records higher exports Gap increases 17.3%, but value of foreign shipments increases as rupee devaluation takes effect PHOTO: FILE ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan exported goods worth $2.23 billion in March, a figure the Ministry of Commerce said was the highest level in four years, reflecting a massive year-on-year increase of 24.4% or $437 million when compared with the amount in March 2017. However, the trade deficit still widened 17.3% year-on-year to $27.3 billion in the cumulative nine-month period, surpassing the amount projected for the entire fiscal year, suggesting that worries for economic managers is far from over. Pakistan has booked the $27.3-billion trade deficit in nine months, but exports have lately started to pick up on the back of combination of administrative and policy actions, said the commerce ministry in a statement released on Monday. Long-term measures key to reducing trade deficit After a gap of four years, exports
