PESHAWAR: Peshawar police foiled a terrorist attack on Sarband Riyaz picket in the wee hours of Friday night, ARY News reported. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police official stated that the police took action after seeing six to seven terrorists coming towards the picket by taking advantage of darkness. The police party, which was alert after recent attacks, opened fire at them and forced them to flee the scene. According to the police, no casualty was reported in the exchange of fire. KARACHI: Sindh cabinet has approved key amendments to the Local Government Act for empowering the LG institutions, mayors and UC chairmen and decided to pass the changes from the assembly at the earliest, ARY News reported on Wednesday. The Sindh cabinet approved the LG Act amendments to hand over powers to the mayors and UC chairmen to head the development authorities in their respective divisions and districts across the province. Following the LG Act amendments, the Karachi mayor will be ex officio of the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), Lyari Development Authority (LDA) and Malir Development Authority (MDA). ISLAMABAD: Two persons including a cop got injured after unidentified assailants opened fire in Islamabad’s Sangjani area on Monday, ARY News reported. Met office predicts fresh spell of monsoon rains in Karachi

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday predicted a fresh spell of monsoon rains in various parts of the country, including Karachi, during this week, ARY News reported. In a statement, the Met office said monsoon currents from Arabian sea are likely to penetrate in upper and central parts of the country from 18th July (night) which are likely to intensify on 19th July (Wednesday). Under the influence of these weather systems, the Met Office said dust-thunderstorm and rain (with isolated heavy falls) are likely in Karachi, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad and other districts of the province from July 20 to July 22 with occasional gaps. LAHORE: Former Punjab chief minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has been detained for a month under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rafia Haider has issued the notification stating that the PTI president will remain in custody at the Camp Jail Lahore for a period of 30 days in order to prevent public disorder. He will stay in Camp Jail under the Superintendent of Camp Jail for the next one month. ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has said that the general elections would possibly be held on the old census data, ARY News reported on Friday. In a statement, Ahsan Iqbal reiterated that elections will be held at its prescribed time and the prime minister already gave the statement about the election commission’s responsibility to finalise the schedule of the polls. He added that the general elections would possibly be held on old census data. Iqbal was of the view that delimitations are still pending after the new population census. “If elections are held in October, then it will be conducted on old census data.” The planning minister said that the authorities found anomalies in the population count of some areas in the recent census. More boys subjected to sexual abuse than girls in Punjab: report

LAHORE: A report from Punjab home department expressed serious concerns over the increase in child abuse crime rate in the province, revealing that more boys are subjected to sexual abuse than girls. The report – compiled on the numeration of such cases from January to June 15, 2023 – stated that 1,390 cases of child abuse were reported in the province in a span of less than six months. According to the report, around 69 percent (959 cases) of the reported cases involved minor boys, while the remaining 31 percent (431 cases) involved girls. The report made more revelations that out of the total perpetrators facing trial in courts, 55 percent were the neighbours of the victims, 32pc strangers and 13pc were relatives.
